Meet the Officers

Thomas Terrell - President

I first started climbing during the fall semester of my freshman year at the UCF Tower. I was instantly hooked. Three years later and now a senior in civil engineering, I’m still obsessed with climbing. Basketball, mountain biking, and hiking are some of my other hobbies when I’m not busy with school or research. Through The Rock Climbing Club at UCF I was introduced to climbing outdoors, with numerous trips to Tennessee and Alabama. I have been fortunate enough to learn a lot about climbing from past club members. I am enthusiastic about sharing this knowledge and helping others to enjoy climbing as much as I do.

I started climbing after I went to a birthday party at a local climbing gym in the sixth grade. My dad and I got memberships and went pretty often until the gym closed down about a year later due to lack of business. From then until college I was on a climbing hiatus, since the closest gym to my house was a few cities away. When I was checking out colleges during my senior year of high school, I came to UCF and felt the climbing tower calling out to me... Two years later, here I am; a junior in mechanical engineering, and still loving climbing. I'm a big-time roped climbing fan, although every now and then I can be spotted bouldering a few problems. Joining the climbing club was the best thing I could have done for my climbing. Since I've become a member I've gone on multiple outdoor trips, learned to lead climb at our neighboring climbing gym, Aigulle, and climbed with a lot of awesome people who are all at different levels in their climbing careers.

After spending 4 years competing as a scholarship athlete during my under graduate studies, I was in search of some sort of physical activity that would test my limits. Like a personal time barrier in running, finding a climbing route that test your limits of strength and endurance gives you something to work against that will always be the same. Unlike other sports where the other teams play can vary from day to day, the rock.route, is just going to sit there smiling at you until you over come it. Unlike running however, which can often seem quite monotonous, climbing allows you to find a whole array of different challenges, each offering you a different way to push yourself. Also, anyone who climbs, I mean anyone, is more than willing to give you some advice .beta. along the way. The UCF rock climbing club is full of people with varying levels of experience, and of diverse backgrounds; but through sharing a passion for this amazing sport, besides just a workout, they really make climbing fun.

I'm currently a senior at UCF studying Anthropology and Spanish. Before I came to UCF, I'd been exposed to a little bit of climbing, and I even climbed once or twice at the UCF Tower during my freshman year when I wasn't rowing for the UCF Rowing team. However, I didn't really start climbing much until I started working for Outdoor Adventure in the spring of my sophomore year. Working for OA and spending most of my free time in the gym offered me more exposure to the world of climbing. I started climbing frequently and I got hooked. Climbing offers me a new way to challenge myself both mentally and physically while having fun. Right now I'm a gym rat (I climb mostly at Aiguille, the Tower, and other gyms in Florida), but I've climbed outside in Alaska and I'm about to spend the summer climbing in Chile and Ecuador. Through the climbing club, I've been able to improve my climbing skills on the club team as well as meet many amazing people who share my passion for climbing. For me, this club has opened the door to a new passion and many exciting adventures.

I'm currently an Alumni of UCF. I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Computer Engineering in the Spring of 2008.I started climbing in the summer of 2006 and since I loved it and so far I have been on two outdoor trips. The club has offerd me much: my climbing skills have improved and I met a lot of friends who enjoy this sport as much as I do. Climbing, so far, is the best sport I've done and it affected me in many ways; It give me the opportunity to travel and view spectacular scenery and experience outdoor life.

"Climbing is art, sport, lifestyle and combat. Above all, it is the effort and achievement of the individual. No committee, country or chat room gets you to the top of a route. It is all about you."
